TPC just got a whole lot stronger with the launch of our very own strength trainer, Dom! Dom is here to shake up your workout routine, shock the body and improve your metabolism through weight lifting and functional training. He has created a unique method of TPC x Strength that will have you working new muscle groups to maximize your results, fight plateauing and raise your workout routine to the next level.
Whilst Dom does focus on strength, he really hones in on traditional Pilates principles and prioritizes technique to ensure you are getting the most out of your workouts. You can expect combinations from your favorite TPC classes combined with some brand new moves that are sure to have you feeling the burn in all the right places. He also has so much scientific knowledge to share with you throughout the classes it’s like a workout for your body and your mind!
Since you’ll be spending a lot of time together on the mat, we thought it best to introduce you to each other properly! We took to Instagram to find out the red hot questions on everyone’s lips and got in touch with Dom to pick his brain for answers.
Where did your love for fitness start and how did you get into the industry?
I have always loved going to the gym. It’s my "me" time and when I’m truly present. My love for the outdoors and nature also helped me find activities that filled my soul. My other love is learning about the body and helping others. With all of that, becoming a personal trainer was a no brainer
How do you feel about being TPC’s newest trainer?
I feel so honored to have been asked to be a part of the team. Honestly, from everything I’ve seen already, the community is so supportive and I can’t wait to be fully immersed into it all!
Why is strength training so important?
There really is no quick and easy way to answer this. There are loads and loads of reasons with scientifically based evidence as to why strength training is so important for both your mental and physical health - we’d need a whole series of blog posts on it! So, in the interest of time, I’ll list some of its benefits: it burns calories efficiently in many ways, one being it builds lean muscle mass which, in turn, raises your metabolism; it strengthens your bones; lowers your risk of injury; improves heart health; boosts your mood, improves brain health…the list goes on
Will strength training make me bulky?
It depends on the acute variables, diet and what your goals are. The training program and classes I have put together for TPC, however, will not build what would be commonly known as ‘bulky muscle’.
Is there a massive difference in your approach to training men and women
Again, it depends on specific goals, but there are for sure some differences when it comes to individual personalized training, yes. For general fitness, however, with goals like staying healthy and increasing cardio health, HIIT style workouts and building a leaner body are fantastic and extremely effective for everyone.
What is your favorite style of workout?
If we are talking gym based, I love weight training and functional movement style HIIT.
What are your hobbies outside of exercising?
I love being active and outdoors in nature so most of my time is spent doing just that! I love rock climbing, hiking, martial arts, surfing and skiing when I get the chance.
Is there a calorie goal I should be burning in each workout?
This, again, is a tough one to answer as it really depends on your goals, current fitness, and diet. You also have active calories burned and the calories you burn just by being alive. For instance, I can burn on average 3000 - 3500 kcals a day and from that only around 600 kcals might be from exercise. To give an answer though, if your goal is to lose body composition, let’s say at a healthy and sustainable 1-2lb a week, I recommend you burn 500-1000 calories more than you eat a day. So 3500 -7000 net kcals a week.
What is one exercise you think everyone should do?
Easy - Boat Hold! Also known as Hollow Body Hold. The core is so important to keep strong.
How can I transform my body through exercise?
In more ways than you can imagine. You can get stronger, leaner, lose body composition, feel more capable, fix injury, sustain bone density and make them stronger, improve your heart health, reduce risk of disease. The list is endless. There is no better time to start than now!
How important is rest and recovery?
Extremely. We have to work hard to keep our body guessing. In doing this, it also needs time to repair. If you put your muscles under tension for too long without allowing for recovery, it can actually then do the reverse of what you are looking to do as your body goes into survival mode.
What are you most looking forward to in the coming year?
Seeing if I’ve achieved all my professional and personal goals and everything I’ve set in motion by 2024.
Did you find it intimidating joining a predominantly female company?
No, not really. Though I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about the incoming feedback! Being on a platform predominantly run and consumed by females can leave you feeling very exposed and open to judgment but it’s genuinely a very warm and kind environment to be a part of.
What advice would you give to someone struggling with the idea of weight training?
If you're feeling unsure, take a small amount of time to do some research - you’ll uncover a wealth of benefits you won’t be able to ignore. If I can say anything, I’ve worked with so many different types of people that I can confidently say, without hesitation, a varied weight training program has helped them all reach their goals faster and more efficiently than any other style of workout.
If you could workout with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
Chris Hemsworth! I mean, I just value and respect everything that man has done. And from one man to another… he’s a handsome bugger ain’t he.
Would you rather go without your favorite meal or strength training for a year?
Favorite meal, for sure.
What’s your go-to sweet snack?
I love fresh fruit with greek yogurt. But if you want a less boring answer, I am a sucker for a homemade cookie.
Are you a sweet or savory person?
Savory all the way. Hence the boring answer above!
What excites you most about being a part of TPC?
I think I’ve said it before, but the community. The team feels like family already. Everyone is just so amazing at what they do and being a part of a group like that just gives off a certain energy. An energy I’m so happy to be experiencing!
Well, there you have it folks! We hope you feel like you know Dom a little better now and found his answers informative.
